Agricultural
The Vaca Valley's rich soil supported fruit and produce farming that shaped Vacaville's identity and economy, with roots in 19th-century agricultural enterprise.
Vacaville was settled in the 1840s and 1850s in a valley with remarkably fertile soil. Early in its history, the area became home to large produce and fruit operations that flourished because of that natural advantage. In 1880, a local farmer named Leonard Buck founded the California Fruit Shipping Association, a business that coordinated the region's agricultural output and helped connect Vacaville's growers to markets across California and the United States. That enterprise became one of the era's important agricultural cooperatives, processing and shipping fruit and produce that became known regionally for quality.
While Vacaville's economy today is anchored by biotechnology, manufacturing, and distribution businesses—including facilities operated by Amazon and Genentech—the agricultural heritage remains part of the city's identity and its geography. The surrounding Vaca Valley still contains farmland, orchards, and crop production, and the valley's soil and climate continue to support agricultural work alongside modern industry. That mix of agricultural and industrial employment gives Vacaville a distinctive economic character.
Agricultural work and small farm operations, whether fruit production, horticulture, or related services, often involve significant risk: weather, commodity prices, and equipment costs create genuine uncertainty about income year to year. A family dependent on agricultural income or managing a farming business faces seasons of plenty and seasons of scarcity. Life insurance allows a family to manage that income uncertainty and protects against the chance that the person whose work and skill make the operation viable would not be there.
