How much life insurance do you need?

A tool to calculate your coverage needs plus detailed explanations: duration of income support, outstanding debts, education planning, and what you already own.

The standard approach involves combining your income potential with your known obligations, then subtracting current assets and coverage already in place. This method is neither exact nor required to be: term policies are typically sold in fixed increments, and the objective is a total that ensures your household can meet its commitments during the critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Estimate = (annual income × years of coverage) + total debts + future education costs − existing savings and group coverage, rounded to $5,000 increments. Think of this as a starting point to inform your decision, not professional guidance.

Why those inputs

Income years. Most insurance professionals recommend coverage for ten to twenty years of earnings; the appropriate length depends on how long your family members would require financial support. In Vacaville and similar communities, parents with young children often prefer longer coverage periods because the peak expenses for childcare, housing, and private school occur during overlapping years.

Debts. The mortgage is typically the largest debt in a family's budget. Insurance proceeds sufficient to pay off this debt permit survivors to remain in the home without experiencing financial strain.

Education. Set aside a reasonable sum per child in today's purchasing power. Including this as part of your overall coverage today prevents the need to apply for additional coverage in the future.

What you currently have. This includes emergency savings available for use and any employer-provided life insurance. Keep in mind that company coverage typically ends when employment ends, so it's wise to count only a portion of it as permanent protection.

Once you've determined your target amount, the quoting tool will display what that coverage costs across different time periods (10 to 30 years) from multiple carriers. Frequently, people purchase somewhat higher coverage than their initial calculation because the monthly cost increase is modest for younger applicants.
